What is Head Transplant?
A head transplant typically uses FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) or FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) techniques. In FUE, individual hair follicles are extracted one by one from a donor site, while in FUT, a strip of scalp is removed, and individual follicles are harvested from it. These follicles are then transplanted to the forehead area where the hairline is receding or thinning. The surgeon ensures that the follicles are placed in a way that follows the natural direction of hair growth, resulting in a hairline that looks as natural as possible. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and patients usually experience minimal discomfort. Since the hair is taken from the patient’s own scalp, the transplant results in permanent, natural-looking hair growth.
What To Expect After The Procedure
After a head transplant, the recovery process typically involves mild swelling, redness, or discomfort around the transplant and donor areas. Scabbing may form on the transplanted areas within the first few days, which is a normal part of healing. The transplanted hair follicles may shed within the first 2-3 weeks, but this is a temporary phase as the follicles enter a resting period. New hair growth typically begins around 3 to 6 months after the procedure, with the final, full results being visible around 9 to 12 months. During this time, the transplanted hair gradually thickens and blends with the natural hair. It’s important to follow aftercare instructions, such as avoiding sun exposure, not washing hair too vigorously, and refraining from any strenuous physical activity for a few weeks. Regular follow-up visits may be required to monitor the healing process and ensure the best possible outcome.
